Update

Good News: Cooper finally got rid of his IV that has been pumping sugar water into him through his foot to stabilize his low blood sugars (very common to babies born to diabetic moms). His little, sensitive feet are now free from cords. Yea!!! He can now wear clothes with cute feeties. The baseball outfit below is from my aunt, Sharron, and cousin, Katie. Cooper loves being held by daddy.

In other news: Cooper got an echocardiogram yesterday. The pediatric cardiologist from Children’s Hospital came because Cooper’s heart is slightly enlarged. He made sure things were running normally. Most everything checked out well. They did say his Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is still open (less than 2 millimeters of an opening). The PDA usually closes shortly after birth, and since Cooper is a preemie they are expecting that it will close on its own. They are also keeping an eye on a ventricular wall that is a little thicker than normal. I will have Courtney and Joe read this over and comment with any corrections on the medical stuff. We are so lucky to have our own team of medical students. They will be following up with another echo to look for improvements.

Still working on: We are still working on getting Cooper to eat. He doesn’t have strong sucking muscles yet so getting milk out of me or a bottle is difficult. The other big problem Cooper has is staying awake. He often conks out mid feeding. He is just acting his age (too young to be born). We practice feeding every 3 hours and then they feed him through the feeding tube that goes through his nose down into his stomach. They won’t let him leave the hospital without being able to eat without the tube. We are being patient and letting him take the time he needs to figure this out. We will keep you updated.
